St. Pancras Station
Facing the Euston Road, this station frontage belies the actually quite small station behind. It used to be a busy station, serving the Midland Railway, but now is almost sleepy, since the line finishes at Leeds/Sheffield rather than Scotland.
A few years ago the Bedford/St. Pancras service (locally know for the old trains, then, as the bedpan line) was rejigged as Thameslink, electrified and removed from St. Pancras to pass through an old tunnel and join up with the Southern service to Brighton. The result is that this station now only serves the needs of the Midland Main Line Service.
However all this is about to change. The station is to become the main London station for the European services through the Channel Tunnel.
Massive works are being carried out behind the station and Kings Cross Station next door on round and through the east end of London.
My biggest regret is that there was a large area of mouldering original railway premises behind the sation which I did not know about until too late to photograph.
The front aspect, actually an old station hotel and to my mind a wonderful building, full of character.
The Clock Tower. Very important in the days when built as 'Railway time' was the
beginning of time zones as we know them now.
Midland Mainline Started off with a collection of old British Rail 125's otherwise known as HST's. It appeared that they seemed to be steadily replacing them with these 170/1 Diesel Railcars, however a government source reliably and kindly informed me that they were actually supplimental until new trains now ordered arrive.
Approaching the 170
But the sod took off before I could get the internal pictures
But an old 125 came in two minutes later.
Sadly the crappy Casio camera memory failed on the other external pictures of her, so the internal ones only will have to do. This is First Class
125's are on the Kings Cross Station Page
Where the plebs squat - second class
